Need to know more before you make the switch? In this section we have compiled articles and information that will help you decide whether or not a Vegetable Oil Fuel System is right for you.

PlantDrive vegetable oil fuel system, convert diesel, gas alternativeTHE BASICS:

Diesel engines are designed to run on "diesel fuel". Diesel fuel is much thinner than vegetable oil. Used cooking oil is generally thicker than new vegetable oil.

To use Vegetable Oil in a A Diesel Engine as FUEL, it must be made "thinner", so that it can be moved, by the "lift pump", from tank, to filter, to injection pump, injectors, and into the combustion chamber, and burned successfully.

PlantDrive vegetable oil fuel system, convert diesel, gas alternativeThere are two generally accepted ways to thin the vegetable oil: (A) Add a Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) System, or (B) make "biodiesel".

Our business is currently mostly focused on:

"(A) Add a Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) System", although we certainly sell components, and even kits, for biodiesel applications.

KITS and COMPONENTS:

We sell both kits and components in our on-line store.

County of Alameda Conversions:

1st Conversion:

PlantDrive's Berkeley shop just converted this 1997 Dodge for the County of Alameda, and they're about to start the conversion of a 2002 Jetta for the County. The County of Alameda has a fleet of Prius hybrids, but recognizes that they're still using fossil fuels with a hybrid.

2nd Conversion:

PlantDrive's Berkeley workshop just completed it's 2nd conversion for the County of Alameda. They've been buying Prius hybrids, but recognize that they're still buying fossil fuels, and plan to replace them with Jettas converted with PlantDrive TwoTank systems - see pics in the VW section of the Photo Gallery and in the Tanks section of the Photo Gallery, and read about the new tank in the Tanks section.Alameda2

There has been a continuous price diminish of commodities due to the current economic crisis and the drop in demand. However this is only a temporary phase from the point of view of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and therefore Fatih Birol, chief econmist of the IEA is warning in the VDI-Nachrichten (21.11.2008): "We need about 380$ billion of investments annually to establish the current production capacity. If we cut the output due to the current economical crisis, there won't be enough capacities when the economy reestablishes itself. We think it is possible that the oil price in 2010 will overtake the prices seen during this year." The IEA is expecting oil prices of over 150$ a barrel already in 2010.

Kids Say Vegetable Oil is a “No-Brainer!”

UK now allows up to 2500 litres use of SVO, no tax, no registry. Customs and Excise have decreed that people who use/produce less than 2,500 litres per year of biodiesel, SVO and/or WVO will not have to register, or submit any returns. The only requirement is for the producer to keep ‘simple records’ of usage, and if it exceeds 2,500 liters in any rolling 12 month period, then they should be notified.

The Calgary Sun - Veggie vehicles halt pain at pump. PlantDrive in Salmon Arm, BC, recently converted a diesel Smart to run on used cooking oil. Locally derived used cooking oil, fantastic fuel economy, and the CO2-negative nature of using vegetable oil as fuel add up to this being "the Greenest Car In North America", according to our preliminary analysis!
